The Bandmaster
Ian Hartnell BSc (Hons), PGCE, LTCL, FTCL. Elected Bandmaster and Deputy Bandmaster many times since joining the band in 1981. Born in Glasgow in 1959, he was educated in Scotland, England and Wales. While at Pontypridd Grammar School he was a member of the Mid-Glamorgan Youth Orchestra, Mid-Glamorgan Youth Choir, Rhondda Symphony Orchestra and the Lewis Merthyr Colliery Band (then a Championship Section band). For 3 years he was the reserve Tuba player for the National Youth Orchestra of Wales. After gaining his BSc (Hons) in Music and Physics and a Postgraduate Certificate in Education, he came to Cirencester in 1981 to teach Science at Kingshill School. After a period as Head of Information Technology he moved to his present post as Head of I.T. Services at Cirencester College. He continues to play Tuba, Double Bass and Electric Bass.
